[JUNKYARD BLUES] While the prospect of boarding the Portland Spirit for a number of hours with no escape from the blues (or the Bluesfest crowd) may sound a tad restrictive (and potentially depressing) to some, I can’t think of a better way to ring in a summer’s eve than with a foot-stomping one-two blues-punch from harp-master Watermelon Slim and guitar ‘n’ bucket duo Hillstomp. The former’s got enough soul in his vocals to flood the Willamette alone, but—if that doesn’t get the blood and tears pumpin’—the sweat worked up by the Burnside-lovin’ (think man, not street) Hillstomp boys (who are set to release a live album later this month) oughta do the trick.

thanks for the SEATTLE WEEKLY PREVIEW: Hillstomp, Robb Benson High Dive Saturday, April 28 By KARLA STARR - Hillstomp are one of those bands you’d want to keep to yourself if the rest of the world weren’t already in love with them. The Portland-based duo, frontman Henry Kammerer and John Johnson, play a brand of punkish north Mississippi trance blues. They’ve called the music on their addictive 2005 release, The Woman That Ended the World, “minimal gothic junkbox blues.” Not only does it harken back to greats like John Fahey, John Lee Hooker, and Blind Willie Johnson; last year, their notoriously rollicking live show earned them invites abroad, where they played the Open House Blues Festival in Belfast and the Spitz Festival of Blues in London. Yes, it’s possible to get a group of hipsters bouncing to a cover of Muddy Waters.
